About this print:
The Atacama is a desert plateau strip of land that sits neatly between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. Its high altitude, minimal cloud cover, dry air and lack of light pollution or radio interference, provides the perfect atmosphere for astronomical observations. As a result, people travel to the Atacama from all over the world to study outer space.

The desert is rich in minerals including boron, lithium, sodium nitrate and potassium salts, which produce unusual dusty colours and crystal-like textures. This surreal landscape mirrors the images produced by the observatories in the area. As Nick travelled through these remote parts of Chile, he felt as though he was exploring Mars' lonely terrain.
